Every teacher's aspiration is to have rich information to help shape and adapt not only student curriculum, but to reflect on their own practice.
What does research say about using video analysis in practice?
We would like to point to a very important piece of research that has recently been conducted in New Zealand, via the University of Auckland. Vijay Bhagwandhin of Evaluation Associates, completed a dissertation as part of her Masters degree to make a case for the importance of teachers developing their reflective capability and adaptive expertise in order to improve student achievement, which she proposed is more likely to take place through video analysis of teacher practice followed by professional learning conversations.
In short, the dissertation found that "... video analysis
during PAC (Practice Analysis Conversations) could be a powerful tool for developing reflective teachers who are highly aware of
how they teach and are committed to improving their effectiveness in order to improve student
learning."
Additionally, some important themes emerged illustrating the richness that video analysis can bring to enhancing professional learning conversations and how teachers can therefore be empowered to take responsibility for reflective practice. Congruent with this research, Arinui video-analysis combines native integration with the ability to converse directly with other members of your kura, school or centre.
This research above is likely to be published in the near future, but we would encourage you to have a read of the following if you would like to look into the benefits further:

to reducing reactivity in collecting observational information for teacher professional development,

How
might I use the Video Analysis Tool in practice?
* Record part of a lesson with a specific focus - for example - giving
instructions. This could then be self and peer reviewed.
* Review a wide-shot of class movement and activity - where are you spending
your time? Who is demanding attention?
* Monitor noise levels relative to the lesson content / instructions / timing.
Does this affect students or yourself?
* Record and reviewing "mock" scenarios with challenging / new
situations. For example, an upcoming parent meeting or the first time a teacher
has done parent interviews.
* Record student feedback as part of an assessment. Compare what conclusions
you initially came to with what you (or peers) saw with review.
* Upload a missed PLD session for absent staff and discuss key points.
*
Record part of a lesson over a period of time so that teachers can review their
progress against a professional goal - such explicit teacher modelling of the
intended learning.
*
Record and review the impact of the Assessment for Learning capabilities on
student learning.
*
Record and review levels of student engagement during a lesson.
*
Monitoring the ratio of teacher talk vs student talk to identify the locus of
control.
All
scenarios can be annotated and self / peer reviewed directly within Arinui!

Some FAQs
Can I share with multiple people and then change who these people are? - Yes - you have complete control of this. When you go to the sharing option, select / deselect the people and hit "Save"
Will the video "fill up" my computer?
- No! The file itself gets uploaded onto our servers and compressed at the same time - as long as you are not keeping lots of copies locally on your iPhone or iPad - you should be good! Use the uploader for your computer found here (
http://cloud.arinui.com/software.aspx) as it will make things fast, efficient and linked to your account!
Is this something I have to do?
- Absolutely not! Like all the features and tools in Arinui, it is about developing your practice for meaningful outcomes - if it doesn't make a difference to teaching and learning - why would you bother?!
